Recovery Timeline

Recovery after eyelid surgery is usually quicker and more comfortable than people expect. At Celikkaya Clinic in Cyprus, blepharoplasty is a day-case procedure under local anaesthetic, so you go home the same day. This timeline explains what to expect at each stage, from the days before surgery through to full recovery.

Before Your Surgery

There are a couple of simple steps in the weeks beforehand. Patients are asked to stop blood thinners three weeks before surgery and to cut back on smoking in the two to three weeks before, as both help the eyelids heal well. There is no strict upper age limit for the procedure

The Day of Surgery

Blepharoplasty is performed under local anaesthetic as a day-case procedure, so you return home the same day. The eyelids will feel tight and look a little swollen to begin with, which is completely normal. Most patients are comfortable resting at home that evening.

The First Few Days

You can usually drive after about a day, once you feel alert and your vision is clear. Bruising and swelling are at their most noticeable in the first few days and then begin to settle. Most patients take around five days off work.

The First Week

Any sutures are removed five to seven days after surgery. By the end of the first week the bruising and swelling have usually reduced a good deal, and many people feel comfortable being out and about, though some residual swelling can remain.

Two Weeks and Beyond

Most patients return to exercise after around two weeks, and full recovery is generally expected within two weeks. Because blepharoplasty removes or repositions the tissue directly rather than masking it, the results are long-lasting, unlike temporary treatments such as fillers or Botox.
